Balancing the need to upskill your team with the fast-paced demands of the shop floor is a common priority for retail employers across Ireland. You want to invest deeply in your people, but you also need to ensure that the learning directly and immediately benefits your everyday retail operations.
Employers consistently tell us they value retail training that delivers a tangible return on investment from day one. That is exactly why the Apprenticeship in Retail Supervision was designed the way it is: to seamlessly blend industry-leading education with your day-to-day business goals, delivering measurable, practical results.
Practical Application Over Pure Theory
On the Retail Apprenticeship Programme, the workplace is always the primary classroom.
Each module includes practical workplace tasks that require the apprentice to apply their learning directly to your business. Whether they are exploring Retail IT, Professional Selling, or Retail Supervision, your staff are actively generating ideas, driving positive change, and improving operations directly on your shop floor.
The Financial Reality: A Fully Funded Investment
When it comes to the bottom line, this apprenticeship is structured to support the employer financially from the very beginning.
- Zero Registration Fees: It is entirely free of charge for employers to register employees on the programme. There are no hidden fees. Should an employee leave the programme, there is no financial penalty or tuition fee to be repaid.
- The €4,000 Employer Grant: Retail employers can avail of a €4,000 government grant for each employee enrolled on the programme. This is paid in four €1,000 instalments over the two-year period, transforming a training initiative into a literal financial investment in your business.
Tutors Who Truly Understand the Shop Floor
The Apprenticeship in Retail Supervision is managed and delivered by the team here at Retail Ireland Skillnet and is guided by tutors who truly understand the Irish retail sector. The tutors delivering this programme bring deep subject-matter expertise to the table.
It is critical that our tutors and guest speakers have a practical understanding of the sector as opposed to just talking at learners. This ensures they truly appreciate the fast-paced nature of retail and your specific commercial needs. Furthermore, the peer-to-peer learning experience is incredibly powerful as your staff train alongside employees from a wide variety of retail organisations nationwide.
Designed to Balance the Roster
Losing a key person from the floor is a massive consideration for any retail business. We understand the busy schedules you have to manage, which is why the programme is strategically scheduled on retail-friendly dates to minimise workplace disruption.
- Manageable Delivery: Apprentices attend classes just 24 days per year (15 days in-person and 9 days online).
- Accessible Locations: In-person classes are conveniently delivered across Galway, Cork, and Dublin to ensure retail staff from all across Ireland can participate.
- Protected Peak Times: Crucially, we avoid scheduling classes near any key trading periods. Your staff will be exactly where you need them during the run-up to Black Friday, the December rush, Easter, and busy Bank Holiday weekends.

Building Your Internal Talent Pipeline
Over the two years, you will appoint a dedicated Workplace Mentor who plays a pivotal role in the apprentice’s success. This mentor goes far beyond standard retail supervision as they provide structured support, guidance and regular, constructive feedback. Through active mentorship, they act as the essential link that helps the apprentice seamlessly translate the new concepts learned into their workplace.
Crucially, this is a shared learning experience. It is not just the apprentice who grows – the mentor is brought on a highly rewarding journey of their own. Through this partnership, mentors frequently develop advanced coaching skills, gain fresh perspectives, and discover new ways to innovate on the shop floor.
For retailers, the Apprenticeship in Retail Supervision provides a strategic roadmap for long-term development, improvement, and innovation. By empowering your staff to proactively challenge the status quo, the programme drives your business’ continuous improvement strategy. Ultimately, it is your opportunity to establish a clear career progression route, helping you attract, develop, and retain talented individuals across your entire team through the two-year programme and beyond.
