A Workplace Mentor Making a Difference in Retail Supervision

Gemma Porter Mentor McElhinneys

Gemma Porter is a dedicated Workplace Mentor to three apprentices on the Apprenticeship in Retail Supervision Programme and a Business Department Manager in the Cosmetics Department at McElhinneys Department Store. With over 10 years of experience in the retail industry, Gemma has worked her way up from the ground level to build a successful career in retail management.

Gemma became a mentor after recognising the challenges apprentices face while learning and working full-time. “Having a strong support system while learning and working full-time can be challenging. I wanted to give apprentices the support they need to succeed and develop in their careers,” she explains. As a mentor, she provides guidance, advice, and encouragement to her apprentices, helping them navigate their dual responsibilities and flourish in their roles.

For Gemma, the most rewarding part of mentoring is watching her apprentices grow, both personally and professionally.

“I love seeing how far the apprentices have come, both as individuals and in their careers. It’s refreshing to see future managers growing, enjoying learning, and applying their knowledge in the workplace,”

Gemma takes great pride in helping her apprentices develop leadership skills and build confidence. The Apprenticeship in Retail Supervision Programme offers a unique combination of hands-on experience and educational elements, allowing Gemma to help shape the next generation of retail leaders.

She strongly recommends the mentor role to anyone looking to give back to their company, enhance their people skills, and explore new ideas that can drive business success. “I absolutely would recommend this role, especially if you want to give something back to the company, build on people and development skills, and listen to new ideas that can be applied to the future of the business overall.”

If you’re considering becoming a mentor, Gemma encourages you to take the leap.

“It’s a fulfilling experience for both you and your apprentice. It’s a great way to build skills, support career growth, and contribute to the future of retail leadership.”
